Irish beef industry leaders warned yesterday that the sector faces a slump unless the Government moves top reverse a sharp fall in the price of older cattle.

The Irish Meat Association played down the announcement this week that Egypt was prepared to resume imports of Irish beef.

Reopening trade with Egypt would not arrest the steep decline in the value of steers - sold almost exclusively within Europe, according to the IMA.
