The Court of Criminal Appeal will today give its verdict on the appeal of two young men against their convictions arising out of the death of Mr Brian Murphy outside Anabels nightclub in August 2000.

Dermot Laide, now 23, Rossvale, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, has appealed his convictions and sentence for manslaughter and violent disorder, and Desmond Ryan, also now 23, Cunningham Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin, is appealing against his conviction and nine-month sentence for violent disorder.

Laide is serving a four-year sentence for manslaughter, with two years concurrently for violent disorder.

Late last year, the appeal court rejected an appeal by Seán Mackey (24), South Park, Foxrock, Dublin, who was jailed for two years when convicted of violent disorder.

The court heard legal arguments over four days that, because of the way the trial was conducted, the convictions are unsafe and should be quashed.
