Algiers - The United States threw its support behind the Algerian government's attempts to use military means to end five years of bloodshed blamed on Islamic extremists.
Mr Ronald Neumann, Washington's ambassador to Algiers, who spoke in French, said after a meeting with President Liamine Zeroual: "We back the military measures," for the protection of civilians.
