Washington - The US Senate has approved the most sweeping changes in campaign finance laws in a quarter-century, moving to block a growing flood of unregulated cash into the political system and dramatically alter the way campaigns are paid for.

On a 59-41 vote, it backed the bill by Senators John McCain and Russell Feingold to ban the unregulated and unlimited donations to political parties known as "soft money". Senator McCain is a Republican from Arizona and Senator Feingold is a Wisconsin Democrat.
