An AC-130 gunship fired its cannon on positions near a shrine where the militants are holed up.

The Imam Ali shrine is occupied by militiamen loyal to rebel cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. They have fought a three-week uprising against US and Iraqi government forces in Najaf.
