President Laurent Kabila's reputation as the "liberators" of former Zaire hangs in the balance following the arrival yesterday of a UN team to help investigate mounting evidence that his troops massacred thousands of refugees.
The six-member advance team arrived early yesterday to prepare the ground for a second group of investigators who will arrive on July 7th to begin the inquiry in earnest. Their arrival coincided with a BBC report that its east Africa correspondent had collected "eyewitness accounts" from villagers who told of both local civilians and Rwandan refugees being killed by Mr
Kabila's forces.
