The United Nations Security Council has approved the creation of a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti to take over the task of restoring stability from a US-led multinational force on June 1.

A resolution adopted unanimously by the 15-nation council approved up to 6,700 U.N. troops and as many as 1,622 civilian police for the impoverished and chronically unstable Caribbean nation, in line with the recommendations of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
