The United Nations has suggested Afghanistan's elections may have to be delayed beyond September but said a delay of a few days should not be seen as a major problem.

However, a senior official of the Election Commission said the aim was still to hold the polls at the end of September.

If elections are to be held as the government has said in September, the election date must be announced 90 days before the vote - today or tomorrow, election officials said.

Mr Farouk Wardak, the head of Election Commission secretariat, said consultations were going on over the date, but said: "We still plan to have elections at the end of September."

US-backed President Hamid Karzai has repeatedly said he wants elections to be held in September.
