British Prime Minister Tony Blair has backed the need for a "substantial reduction" of Iraqi debt using the framework of the Paris Club during 2004.

"The United Kingdom agrees wholeheartedly with the need for a substantial reduction of Iraqi debt," a spokesman for Mr Blair said following talks between the prime minister and US envoy Mr James Baker.

"The United Kingdom will discuss it actively with its international partners in order to achieve this common objective."
