UEFA said today it will not accept moves by Rangers and Celtic to join the Premiership unless they are backed by the English and Scottish associations.

"We do not as such support teams moving from one country to another," chief executive Gerhard Aigner said.

Aigner said after a meeting of UEFA's executive committee that previous comments he made, suggesting that he might sanction such a move, had been "misinterpreted."

Europe's governing body said it would only look at the possibility if it was approached jointly by footballing authorities in England and Scotland.

"Celtic and Rangers can't make the approach, it's got to come from the Associations and Leagues concerned," UEFA spokesman Mike Lee said.

Several key Premiership officials and world football's governing body FIFA have voiced their opposition to a move, floated by the Glasgow clubs in recent weeks. - AFP
