Two Co Carlow men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Saturday with membership of an illegal organisation following a Garda investigation into the activities of dissident republicans.

Mark Doran (26), of Poachers Lock, Leighlinbridge, and Patrick Dermody (20), of New Road, Leighlinbridge, were each charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA, on October 26th.

Mr Dermody was also charged with the possession of a double-barrelled shotgun for an unlawful purpose at Garryhundon, Carlow, Co Carlow, on October 25th.

Det Garda Robert Lackey of the Special Detective Unit, gave evidence of arresting Doran last Friday evening at Athy, Co Kildare.

Det Sgt Gerry Egan, Carlow , gave evidence of arresting Dermody in Carlow on Friday night.

Both men were remanded in custody until next Wednesday when a bail application is expected to be made.
