Two dead and five injured in Co Down crash

Two people have been killed and five others injured in an overnight crash in Newry, Co Down.

Two people have been killed and five others injured in an overnight crash in Newry, Co Down.

The dead have been named as Sean Paul McNamee (22) and Aisling Treanor (17) both from the city.

McNamee was the driver and Treanor the front-seat passenger in one of the two cars involved in the crash. Three back-seat passengers were taken to hospital where two of them, both male, are in a critical condition. The female passenger is described as unwell.

A mother and daughter travelling in the second car are also described as ill. The casualites were brought to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry with one of the men later transferred to the Royal Victoria in Belfast.

The crash happened shortly before 1am at the Forkhill roundabout on the main Dublin road.  The road was closed to traffic for a time this morning.

Earlier, a woman died in a crash in Derry. Maureen Ward (44) of Circular Road in the city, died when a lorry and car collided on the Hollyhall Road.
