British army bomb experts carried out two controlled explosions on a suspicious object in Derriaghy, Co Antrim, last night. The operation followed the planned search of a house in Milltown Gardens. Several families were evacuated from the area for two hours.

Meanwhile, a rifle was found behind railings in Rathbone Street, off Little May Street in Belfast city centre. The weapon was taken away for forensic examination.
