At least 22 people died and seven were injured when a bus going from Brazil to the Paraguay border collided head-on with another bus in southern Brazil today.

Traffic police said the two vehicles burst into flames soon after the collision near the town of Campo Mourao in Parana state.

"They burned out completely, many people died in the fire," a spokesmand said, adding that both buses carried Brazilians, mainly so-called suitcase shoppers who travel to Paraguay to buy cheap contraband goods.

The drivers of both buses died in the crash and police were investigating the cause. The two buses operated on the route between southeastern Minas Gerais state and southern border town of Foz de Iguacu.
