British police have confirmed the discovery of two bodies near Soham, the hometown in England of missing 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

But they could not confirm that the bodies were those of the two girls.

"We are making urgent inquiries to establish the identities of the two bodies and to determine if there are any suspicious circumstances," a Cambridgeshire police spokesman said.

The bodies were found at Mildenhall, about 12 kilometers east of Soham, after a couple in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of murdering the girls, who disappeared on August 4th.

Police said the bodies were found by a member of the public along a road that leads north out of Mildenhall.

A Sky Newsreporter at the scene, quoting police, said the bodies had been found in "mixed terrain" crisscrossed by paths, close to a runway at RAF Lakenheath, a large US air force base just north of Mildenhall.

A second major air base, belonging to the Royal Air Force but run by the US military, is northwest of Mildenhall.

The parents of Holly and Jessica had been informed of the discovery, and that a formal identification of the body was underway. AFP
