At least 12 people were killed and 80 injured after a three-way bus crash at dawn on a highway 271 kilometers north of Lima, police said.

The accident occurred near the town of Huarmey, the final destination of one of the buses, which had been carrying a group of university students.

Among the dead were seven men, four women and a child.

Police helicopters were sent to the crash site to ferry victims to Lima, after local hospitals were overwhelmed by the number of injured.

Although the investigation is in its preliminary stages, police said low visibility and rain-slicked roads may have been contributing factors in the crash.
