Brighton - Union leaders yesterday hit back at the British Prime Minister's appeal for them to get into the real world, returning his words with a vengeance.

Several speakers at the TUC Congress said they knew what it was like to be in the real world - and one hit out at being "lectured". Mr Blair had angered some delegates to the Brighton conference with an appeal for unions to modernise and a jibe that things were warmer in the real world.
