Tomorrow's Newbury meeting in doubt

Tomorrow's big meeting at Newbury is in doubt after a deluge of rainfall last night

Tomorrow's big meeting at Newbury is in doubt after a deluge of rainfall last night. The venue was decimated by 30 millimetres of overnight rain that led to the abandonment of today's seven-race card, due to commence at 2pm.

"As we were only forecast five millimetres of rain, we had to call a 6.45am inspection this morning," said clerk of the course Richard Osgood. "Parts of the course were waterlogged so we were left with no choice but to abandon."

Osgood has now called a 2.30pm inspection this afternoon to assess the chances of tomorrow's meeting going ahead.

He added: "The sun has come out and we are keeping our fingers crossed, but we'll just have to wait and see. We will take a look this afternoon."
