Dili - Armed opponents of independence for East Timor attacked United Nations police advisers and their helicopter yesterday as the UN tried to evacuate aid workers injured in an earlier clash, witnesses said.

A number of East Timorese aid workers had been hurt when their road convoy was set upon yesterday afternoon by militia armed with home-made guns and machetes in the town of Liquisa, 40 km (25 miles) west of Dili, the witnesses said.
