Tiger Woods registered a one-shot victory over Masters champion Vijay Singh of Fiji in the rain-delayed $6 million Player's Championship today, adding golf's richest event and unofficial fifth major to his resume.
It was the second consecutive PGA Tour victory for Woods, confirming his return to form after snapping the longest winless stretch of his remarkable career a week earlier at Bay Hill.
"This means my slump is over," joked Woods, who had gone eight events without a victory.
"This is an incredible test against a tough field on a tough course."
With his final round split evenly over two days, Woods carded a five-under 67 to finish the tournament at 14-under and claim his 26th career win and a winner's prize of $1,080,000 as the Players Championship was decided on a fifth day for a second successive year after rain interrupted play yesterday.
Last year, Woods was beaten into second place by Hal Sutton.
Singh, who lives just 10 minutes from Sawgrass, saw his hopes for a home victory disappear with triple-bogey seven on the 14th hole.
Singh battled back but had given up too much ground and posted a final-round 68 to finish alone in second and collect a $648,000 check.
Double Masters champion Bernhard Langer of Germany fired a final-round 67 to finish third one shot further adrift.
Third-round leader Jerry Kelly faded over the final 18 holes, returning a one-over 73 to drop to fourth, four shots behind Woods. -Reuters
