Beaumont Hospital remains closed for new admissions this evening following the discovery of three more cases of the contagious winter vomiting virus in the last 24-hours.

This brings to seven the number of cases while 16 more people with suspected infection have been isolated from other patients.

As a result, up to 45 elective admissions per day are being postphoned at the hospital.

The hospital is urging people not to visit friends and relatives at Beaumont unless absolutely necessary. It hopes to resume non-emergency medical procedures next week.

The virus causes vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea with the symptoms lasting approximately 48 hours.
