Three men have been rescued from a cave near Doolin, Co Clare, this morning after being trapped by rising floodwater overnight.

The alarm was raised at around 3.30am when one of the group contacted Ennistymon Garda station by phone.

It is understood the men, all experienced cavers from Co Clare,  became trapped in the network of caves running from Lisdoonvarna towards Doolin after heavy rains caused underground floods.

All three men are reported to be safe and well.

The rescue operation was carried out by gardaí, the Doolin Coast Guard, the fire service and the Irish Cave Rescue Organisation.
