Meanwhile, in Sweden, police have confirmed that two children killed in a road accident there on Wednesday were from Northern Ireland.

The children, a two-year-old girl and a boy aged between five and seven, died from their injuries when the car in which they were travelling collided with a truck near the village of Osmo.

Another child was seriously injured while two more children and the mother suffered light injuries. The family are being treated at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm.

Their father had not yet identified the bodies of the two children last night as he was still in a state of shock, according to Swedish police.

"He is still in shock with too much to think about. We have not asked him to identify the bodies yet, we are in no rush," local police officer Jonas Wimlos told The Irish Times yesterday.

Swedish police expect to speak to the family again today but will withhold names until relatives have been informed.

The family had been renting a holiday cabin near Osmo.
