Three in court on Kerry graverobbing charges

A third man has appeared in court in connection with charges of  damaging tombs and disturbing corpses at a north Kerry graveyard.

Mr John Smith (31), Sandyford, Co Dublin, was arrested and charged on April 1st, Listowel District Court heard.

Two other men, Mr Alan McNulty (28), Sandyford, Dublin and Mr Matthew O'Donnell  (23) of Aughills, Castlemaine, Co Kerry, have already been charged in connection with the same offences.

All three are  charged with damaging three tombs at Raheala graveyard, Ballyduff, Co Kerry,  on August 4th, 2003.

They are also charged with unlawfully disinterring, disturbing or otherwise interfering with the remains of two people, one of whom, Ms Bridie Fitzmaurice,  had only been buried eight months previously. The remains of  Mr Jack Browne, interred in 1998, had also been disturbed.

The last time a charge of its kind had come before the courts was in London in 1880.
