A car exploded in Russia's second city St Petersburg today, killing three people and seriously injuring a fourth, Russia's Emergencies Ministry has said.

Emergencies Ministry spokesman Andrei Alyabev said three people, including a 3 year-old child, died in the explosion.

The explosion took place near the city's "Udelnaya" metro station.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was in the region around St Petersburg today to inspect a new border post with neighbouring Finland.

The ministry declined to comment on any links between his visit and the explosion.
