Gardaí in Co Clare have arrested three men in connection with their investigation into a hit-and-run in which an 89-year-old pedestrian died last night.

The man was knocked down by a car at 8.30pm at Ogonnolloe, Killaloe. The car failed to remain at the scene.

A Garda statement said three men, all in their 20s, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

"A car was found burnt out in the Scarriff area and this is being technically examined. Investigations are continuing," the statement added.

Garda Supt Tony Kenneally of Killaloe, who is leading the investigation, earlier appealed for witnesses to the incident.
