Thousands of golf fans are expected to crowd into Ballybunion, Co Kerry, from today until Saturday as they attend the Murphy's Irish Open.

With 12,000 fans having tickets, Mr David Linnane, the tournament director, says he expects 6,000 cars but that there is room for 35,000.

With no extra scheduled bus services to the town, most fans will be travelling by car. Drivers coming from Dublin, Limerick, Galway and generally all points north of the 18th hole, will be signposted from Limerick onto the N69 along the Shannon estuary, through Tarbet into the town from the north.

Those coming from the south should travel by Abbeyfeale and Listowel and those from the rest of Kerry should take the road from Ballyduff.

Mr Linnane said there would be a heavy Garda presence in the area. Gardai would be enforcing a rigid no-parking policy in Ballybunion and he urged those with passes for non-public car-parks to bring them or face being directed to one of two public car-parks. These are both located a short distance from the town with the car-park on the south side being served by a free shuttle bus.
