THIS WEEK IN THE GARDEN

BEARDED irises look especially sad when flowering is over

BEARDED irises look especially sad when flowering is over. Flower stems should be cut down to ground level and untidy leaves which begin to show yellow and brown at the top can be cut in half to create a more presentable appearance, These plants have done especially well this year having enjoyed a nice baking in last summer's heat.

The rhizomes like to sit on the surface of the ground with the roots reaching down into the soil keeping them anchored. To ensure that they receive the maximum of summer sun, the plants need an open place where they will not be over shadowed or invaded by later summer foliage and flowers. This makes them slightly tricky candidates to accommodate as the most suitable situation is often at the front of a border. Be nice to them now if you want good flowers next year.
