A head-on collision between a bus and a truck in southern Iran killed 30 people including a number of hardline Basij militiamen, the official IRNA news agency said today.

It said the two vehicles crashed on the road between Kerman and Sirjan yesterday as the Basiji volunteers were returning from a museum visit. Television said 20 people were also injured in the crash, some of them critically.

A hardline conservative former MP, Mr Ali Movahedi Savoji, was also killed yesterday in an unrelated car crash, IRNA said.

About 17,000 people died in road accidents in Iran last year.
