Third section of Spire to be connected this week

The third part of the O'Connell Street Spire will be put in place later this week

The third part of the O'Connell Street Spire will be put in place later this week. It was originally planned to be erected today.

Engineers from Dublin City Council are planning to have the 120-metre monument completed by the end of the month when it will stand seven times higher that the GPO.

The third section, which measures 15.82 metres and weighs 20 tonnes, was brought to O'Connell Street before Christmas from the Radley Engineering plant in Co Waterford but was not connected before the holidays.

It is hoped that the remaining three sections, measuring 14.8 metres, 14.04 metres and 24 metres, respectively, will be in place by the end of January.

The overall cost of the project is expected to be €4.6 million.
