Smoke alarms are installed in almost three-quarters of homes in the State, but only one-third of them are checked regularly to ensure they work, according to the National Safety Council.

Introducing the 1998 National Fire Safety Week, which starts next Monday, t he council stressed the need for people to instal a minimum of two smoke alarms in their homes and to test them frequently, ideally once a week.
