Tesco says truck ban report false

Tesco Ireland has denied reports claiming its trucks would be affected by a ban on double-decker trucks in Ireland.

Tesco Ireland has denied reports claiming its trucks would be affected by a ban on double-decker trucks in Ireland.

Mr Dermot Breen, director of corporate affairs at Tesco Ireland, was responding to a report in yesterday's Irish Examiner claiming that Tesco trucks would be among those affected by a bar on double-decker trucks by the Department of Transport. The report also claimed the double-decker trucks could not fit through Dublin's Port Tunnel.

Mr Breen confirmed to The Irish Times that Tesco Ireland trucks "will in no way be affected by the height of the Dublin Port Tunnel".

"There have been mischievous and untrue claims that so called double-decker or 'supertrucks' operated by Tesco will be unable to use the tunnel. The height of any Tesco trucks currently or likely to be in use in the future come well within the height restrictions of the Dublin Port Tunnel" Mr Breen said yesterday.

"We have no concerns about the Port Tunnel. In fact we totally welcome the development of the tunnel", Mr Breen told The Irish Times.

A spokesman for the Minister of Transport, Mr Brennan, dismissed yesterday's report as speculation.
