Christmas morning might bring more of a shock than a surprise under the tree for some people this year after Tesco Ireland revealed that some of its indoor Christmas lights are faulty and "may cause an electric shock".
For the second year running, the chain has issued a product recall notice for several types of Christmas lights and has urged customers who bought them to stop using them immediately.
Last year, Tesco recalled four types of lights believed to pose a fire risk.
The four types of lights being recalled this year are: Tesco 100 indoor frosted berry lights (model 5056-36); Tesco 100 indoor clear lights (model 5056-06); Tesco 100 indoor coloured lights (model 5056-06); and Tesco 200 indoor clear lights (model 5056-35).
The product name and model number can be found on the white label attached near the plug. No other product is affected by the recall.
Customers will be given a full refund for the products purchased, Tesco said.
A spokesman for Tesco Ireland said the move to recall the lights was "purely precautionary" and that no complaints had been received from customers about the lights.
He said the safety issue had been identified through Tesco's supply network. Around 4,000 sets of the lights were sold through the store network here, the spokesman confirmed.
"The issue is in relation to a control box that may cause a shock," he said. "In the greater scheme of things, it's a very small percentage of the Christmas lights we sell."
The same lights are also being recalled in Britain.
