A 19-year-old who was involved in a "terrifying attack" with fireworks on two female gardaí at a vehicle checkpoint near the south Armagh border in Co Monaghan was remanded in custody for sentence at Carrickmacross District Court yesterday.

Gerard Kindlon, with an address at Clonalig, Crossmaglen, was charged with assaulting Garda Grainne Gallagher and Garda Caroline Leonard, both of Carrickmacross, and causing injury to Garda Gallagher, at The Glebe, Inniskeen, on October 13th last. Garda Supt Tom Long, Carrickmacross, prosecuting, told the court the gardaí were at a checkpoint when they saw a car pull up at a roundabout close by.

Fireworks were discharged and they had to run for safety to their patrol car as a result of the explosions around them. One exploded close to Garda Gallagher causing an injury to her ear-drum which necessitated medical attention over a period.

Mr Brendan Larney, defending, said Kindlon did not realise the seriousness of his action at the time and was now very remorseful for what he had done.
