Boxing:World number one Katie Taylor will have her final outing before next month's European Women's Championships in Holland in Cork on September 30th. The Bray lightweight will face Dutch champ Jessica Belber over four, two minute rounds on the 3rd St John's BC annual show just outside Fermoy.
Taylor has been included in a nine-strong Irish women’s squad for the European Championships which begins in Rotterdam on October 16th. The Bray native will be aiming for an unprecedented fifth European title in a row in the Netherlands.
Taylor finished up a training camp with the Irish Elite men’s squad in Cologne last weekend. The men are preparing for the World Championships and Olympic qualifiers. The former tournament begins in Baku, Azerbaijan next Monday and Taylor’s coach and dad Peter, who was in Cologne, reckons the 10-man team are looking good.
“You could see that they lads were getting stronger and stronger every day in Cologne. There’s a great buzz in the camp and confidence is high, said Taylor senior. “Katie got some good sparring in Cologne. She’ll have her final contest before the European Championships in Cork.
