The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, unveiled a plaque at the Supreme Court to commemorate 10 members of the legal profession who sacrificed their lives (in the case of Theobald Wolfe Tone, Bagenal Harvey and the Sheares brothers) or their careers as a result of their part in the 1798 Rebellion.

Paying tribute to the 10 yesterday, the Taoiseach said they "all chose to put principle before profit, and the general good above their private gain". He thanked the descendants of Thomas Addis Emmet and Bagenal Harvey who were present and all those involved in projects to mark the bicentenary.

"Today, more than ever, in the aftermath of the Good Friday agreement, we are guided by the pluralist, democratic and republican principles of the United Irishmen. They were a truly talented if tragic generation," he said.

Among the many lawyers present at the unveilling were the Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, and the Attorney General, Mr David Byrne SC.
