The ASTI last night said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the Taoiseach's comments on second-level teachers.
Mr Ahern said in the Dail last night that the Government would not deal with any group outside the new Programme for Prosperity and Fairness. He made specific mention of the ASTI, who withdrew from ICTU and the negotiations on the "early settlers" issue.
"As a trade union not party to the new national programme, the ASTI will pursue a pay claim on behalf of its members and expects to be treated fairly by their employer," said Mr Charlie Lennon, ASTI general secretary.
He added the issue of "early settlers" arose because the Government treated its employees unfairly under settlement clause 2 III of the PCW. This resulted in anger on the part of ASTI members and led to the union withdrawing from ICTU and the national agreement talks.
