The acting managing director of the Sunday Tribune, Mr Frank Cullen, said last night he was "very pleased" at the progress made in talks with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) last night over a dispute at the newspaper.

The dispute arose last week when five journalists were let go and the paper's newly appointed editor, Mr Mall Cooper, appointed four new staff journalists. The NUJ instructed the new appointees not to take up the positions.

The union is to consult journalists at the paper today about a possible settlement.

After last night's talks it was decided that certain documents relating to employment contracts would be handed over by the Sunday Tribune to chapel officers.
