A man who attacked a doorman with a bottle and bit him because he wrongly thought his boyfriend had been badly beaten has been given a suspended sentence.

John Conlon (32) thought he was getting justice for the “love of his life”, according to his defence counsel, Marie Torrens, when he assaulted Emmet McMahon, who was working at The George Bar in Dublin on Gay Pride Day two years ago.

Conlon, Valeview Gardens, Finglas, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Mr McMahon on June 27th, 2009. He has 36 previous convictions which include theft, failure to appear at court, trespass, criminal damage, road traffic and assault.

Ms Torrens told Judge Martin Nolan Conlon “really, really lost it that night. This man was the love of his life.”
