London - A leading heart surgeon and a former NHS chief executive were struck off the medical register yesterday and another surgeon was banned from carrying out heart surgery on children for three years following an inquiry into the deaths of 29 children and babies at Bristol Royal Infirmary.

British Health Secretary Mr Frank Dobson immediately announced a full public inquiry following the ruling by the General Medical Council.

The council ruled that heart surgeon Dr James Wisheart (60) and former chief executive of the United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust Dr John Roylance (67) should be struck off after being found guilty of serious professional misconduct.

Surgeon Dr Janardan Dhasmana (58) was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and banned from performing heart surgery on children for three years.
