Surfers have expressed concern that a planned €6 million pier development at Doolin could adversely affect one of the Republic’s best-known surf breaks.

Last month, Clare County Council lodged plans for the pier development which is expected to boost Doolin’s status as a gateway to the Aran Islands. However, the proposed development is close to what West Coast Surf Club’s chairwoman described as world-class surf breaks.

In her submission, Cliodhna Fawl states: “To proceed with the proposed works without any assessment of the impact on these waves . . . sends the wrong message.”
