The editor of the Sunday Mirror, Mr Colin Myler, resigned today - three days after the collapse of the Leeds footballers' trial.
Mr Myler's resignation comes after the Leeds footballers' trial was halted and the jury was discharged due to an article published in his paper.
The paper expressed its deep regret on Tuesday. It still faces contempt-of-court charges.
It is thought Myler decided to resign after a meeting at Trinity Mirror this morning.
As he left the Mirroroffice he was quoted as saying: "The truth will come out."
Journalists on the paper are said to be shocked by the move.
One journalist said: "Everything was business as usual here this morning. He held conference and was making executive decisions.
"People are really, really gutted. He was an extremely fair guy and one of the best editors the paper has had in years."
