The South African National Party yesterday closed ranks behind a young man, Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, as Mr F.W. de Klerk formally relinquished the leadership reins, writes Patrick Laurence from Johannesburg. Mr van Schalkwyk (37), executive director of the party until his election yesterday, defeated three rivals, securing 75 of the 105 electoral college votes.
