Gardaí have begun an inquiry into an armed robbery in North Dublin where a local man was robbed on the street while carrying a "substantial quantity" of cash.

Two men on a Kawasaki motorbike, one of whom was armed with a shotgun, pulled up alongside a local man who was walking on Dowth Road in Cabra at about 10.20 a.m.

The motorcyclists forced the man to hand over the money before making their getaway.

It was believed the man was about to make a cash lodgement. The Garda spokesman said he could not speculate if the robbers knew the man would be carrying the money.
