Students urged to reject antisocial drunkenness

Students were urged yesterday to reject the "culture of acceptance" of antisocial drunkenness.

Students were urged yesterday to reject the "culture of acceptance" of antisocial drunkenness.

Speaking at the launch of a new alcohol awareness guide for students, the chief executive of Meas (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society), Fionnuala Sheehan, said changes in attitudes were already taking place.

"Research into how young adults feel about excessive drinking and the entrenched cultural perceptions in Ireland around the whole issue of alcohol consumption showed that Irish society is ready for a new approach to addressing the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and misuse," she said.

The "No Nonsense" guide, which offers tips for the start of the college year, was produced with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI).

"No Nonsense is all about getting the know-how to know when," said Ms Sheehan. "This guide proves that being drink-aware isn't at odds with having a vibrant student social life." The campaign was "challenging students to reject the cultural acceptance of antisocial drunken behaviour which is tolerated in Ireland," she added.

USI welfare officer Peadar Hayes said the guide did not lecture students, but offered practical advice. It can be downloaded from  www.drinkaware.ie
