SIPTU members at the Irish Glass Bottle plant at Ringsend in Dublin have voted by an overwhelming majority to take industrial action.
The industrial action will begin next Monday and comes as a result of the company’s unwillingness to accept a Labour Court recommendation on severance terms to be paid to employees.
The plant is due to close on July 5th with the loss of 380 jobs. SIPTU branch Secretary, Mr Gerry Lynch, said that due to the negative attitude of the company’s management, his members were left with no choice other than to ballot to for industrial action.
Mr Lynch added that his members had shown great restraint despite a rather provocative attitude on the part of the management in recent weeks.
A spokesman for the plant declined to comment on the news of the industrial action.
Irish Glass is owned by the publicly-quoted Ardagh group. Ardagh has indicated that it does not have the resources to meet the severance pay demands.
