Stocks recouped early losses and
finished mixed today, as the Dow industrials rose 45.21 points (0.52 per cent) to 8,725.25.
The Nasdaq fell 15.54 points (1.16 per cent) to 1,328.65 at the closing bell.
The Standard and Poor's 500, also helped by a late turnaround, ended with a gain of 7.71 points (0.85 per cent) at 910.49.
Stocks spent much of the day in negative territory as investors digested weak economic data, including the initial estimate for second quarter US gross domestic product - showing a tepid 1.1 per cent growth pace - smaller than analysts had expected.
