We commend to the attention of the Irish public an article upon oyster culture which the Marquis of Lorne has contributed to the March number of Good Words. It is an industry that is carried on in France at a vast profit, and it will be judged from the evidence given that the French have prosecuted the industry with a perseverance and success only equalled by their enterprise in the matter of market gardening. Lord Lorne fully describes the "oyster nurseries" in the Bay of Arcachon, and it is suggested that if anything like the same facilities of enclosure were allowed on English foreshores, an English oyster culture might spring up to rival that of France. It will occur to many readers of the paper that the industry might be extended at home, and be made a far larger source of profit. The oyster-eater of today pays a high price for indulgence in a luxury, but there is no reason why the supply should not vastly be increased, and the profit resulting from it greatly enlarged, and equally, to the advantage of the dealer and the consumer.
