SPEED Rage is not the most imaginative of titles and unfortunately the same can be said about the game itself. The game's makers clearly thought they had something different to offer us spoilt game players but, with games like Grand Prix 2 and Screamer (at the lighter end of the scale) around, enticing car racing fans is not easy.
Speed Rage, it has to be said, does offer five modes of gameplay - Qualify, Rage, Speed, Head to Head and Havoc. These can be simplified in to the categories - normal racing, racing with power ups and battle mode. Oh, and you do get the choice of two vehicles. A speedboat or a dune buggy.
There are a host of the usual power ups, but one slightly different angle in Speed Rage is the inclusion of an on screen arrow which is supposed to keep you on the straight and narrow. But you may well find yourself focusing on this rather than the road, so thankfully it is optional.
In Havoc mode Speed Rage takes us back to the great old days of Mario Kart. Here you battle against other players using missiles, mines, rockets and the like to take the enemy out. This sounds good in theory but in practice it is a bit of a mess.
If anything worthwhile can be found about this indifferent mishmash of a game, it is that they included two CDs should you wish to play over modem. Apart from this it offers little else. Root out that old Nintendo and crank Mario and his buddies back up - it would he much better fun!
