Fine Gael leader Mr Michael Noonan today moved the writ for the Tipperary South by-election due because of the death of the Fine Gael TD Ms Theresa Ahearn last September.

Fine Gael leader Mr Michael Noonan.

The by-election must be held between 21 and 28 days from now.

The by-election will be seen as the first real test of Mr Noonan's leadership. He took over from Mr John Bruton in February.

Last June voters in the constituency elected the Independent candidate Mr Séamus Healy in a by-election caused by the death of the Labour TD Mr Michael Ferris. The third TD in the constituency is the Fianna Fáil Minister of State for Agriculture Mr Noel Davern.
